Dr. Dre has finally delivered a new album sixteen years after his last full-length offering.
Eager anticipation had been building for the release of Detox until recently when Dre announced he didn't like it, on his Beats 1 show. Suggesting, “I worked my ass off on it and I don't think I did a good enough job.”.
In Detox's place though, comes a new collection of material, Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre, inspired by the release of the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. Seeing as Dre clearly places his artistic integrity over cashing in on the huge anticipation for Detox, it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume this is a release he feels is on par with some of his classics. He’s called Compton his “grand finale”.
It's a titanic undertaking folding multiple narratives into something that, somehow, still feels like a unified concept. While Compton's introductory news flashback would suggest an album stuck in the past, Dre's third LP is as concerned with relevant urgency as it is legacy-making.
All profits from the album will go toward building a new community arts centre in Compton.
Stream Compton: The Soundtrack through Apple Music. Out now.
